Lewis Receives 2019 BEYA Student Athlete Award

Computer Engineering Senior Cameron Lewis received the 2019 Black Engineer of the Year Awards (BEYA) Student Athlete Award for his high academic and athletic performance – mastering his skills in the classroom and on the court. BEYA represents global excellence and competitiveness in STEM (BEYA).

A 6’ 8” Buffalo, New York native, Lewis was always quite fond of math and was exposed to computer science at a young age. His passion for computer engineering bloomed when he submitted an autonomous quadcopter as his high school senior project.

Lewis chose Howard University for his undergraduate studies in computer engineering, as no other school offered the package he was specifically looking for – an excellent engineering education and top-level Division I basketball. Lewis continuously maintains his high GPA, even while on the road, earning himself several academic scholarships.

From an academic and cultural standpoint, Lewis acknowledges that his presence is needed. “I love seeing people of my color in the field,” he points out.

We are excited that Lewis’ journey with us continues even after he graduates with his BS in computer engineering this Spring. He plans to pursue his graduate education in electrical engineering here at Howard University, making this big decision amidst offers from other universities, such as Duke University. He expressed much gratitude to our faculty and staff for supporting his ambitious endeavors.

“I’m always trying to do my best on and off the court. I will continue the path to finish out strong and try to help others as much as I can,” says Lewis.

Lewis is also a senator for the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Howard University Student Chapter, providing technical expertise and service to the community year-round.
